A Sneak Peek of Nothing On Productions' Clue
On Wednesday, June 12, 2019, I had the privilege of catching the dress rehearsal of Clue by Nothing On Productions. First a slight disclaimer, like all my previous theatre-related articles this is not a critical review of the show but rather an overview of the show with my own personal insights sprinkled in. With that said, let's get into everything Clue.
A little background on Clue for the uninitiated, it is the classic murder mystery game that was first manufactured in the UK in 1949. Since then, the game has been franchised to spawn spin-off games, books, tv shows, films, a musical, and this play which is an adaption of Jonathan Lynn’s screenplay for the 1985 feature film. The play features the six iconic characters that appear in the board game as well as the film Miss Scarlet, Professor Plum, Mrs. White, Mr. Green, Mrs. Peacock, and Colonel Mustard. Those names are aliases for the characters that have been invited to a rather peculiar dinner party on a dark and stormy night. The show is a quintessential whodunnit, and if you loved the film or the board game you are sure to enjoy the show.
Although the company is called Nothing On they really do put everything on. With the first thing striking me about this production being the set, which is both extra af and based on the board game design. As you may have learned from my previous articles I have a deep appreciation for things that can be considered ‘a bit much’. This set definitely delivers on that and each room is clearly defined and the set decoration is EVERYTHING. I would also like to call attention to the sound design which really sets the tone for the show before it even begins. You feel as though you are in the mansion on a dark and stormy night as soon as you take your seat in the theatre. The show is full of non-stop twists and turns and is perfect if your vibe is one part over the top, one part mystery, and one part comedy. Lastly, the casting of this show is so on point and each actor is so fully committed to their role.
The cast of Clue includes Phil Goodridge, Nichole Woodman, Maddy Mant, Jill Kennedy, Chris Panting, Michelle Lambert, George Robertson, Zac Hutton, Carrie Furey, and Justin Peddle. The crew includes Director - Janet O'Reilly, Producer - Katherine Elliott, Stage Manager - Ashley Ring, Set Design & Construction - Kirsti Mikoda, Lighting Design - Reg Hoskins, Sound Design - Kat Burke, ASM & Properties - Jacqueline Ottenhiemer, Costume - Jackie Hibbs, and Construction Crew - Michael Nolan +.
